There's a Store Opening in Union Sq. Called Trader Joe's

Wednesday, January 18, 2006, by Joey

No matter how many times we tell you Trader Joe's is opening a grocery store in NYU's Palladium dormitory, we inevitably get emails asking, "Hey, what's up with Trader Joe's?" Well, we'll friggin tell you what's up! Actually, the Times' Florence Fabricant will, because she reports today that (1) the store will be open in three months, and (2) they're getting around the whole "no wine in grocery stores" thing by hawking their precious Two-Buck Chuck in a separate wine store, in the dorm's other retail space (they're divided by the building's lobby). And while it may seem annoying to have to buy your groceries and then go next door for your wine, let us remind you: the staff wears Hawaiian shirts. Isn't that hilarious?!

They aren't made to wear Hawaiian shirts at the TJ's in Hadley, MA. They do, however, give kids free helium balloons, so the sense of supermarket whimsy is still intact.

A chain store in a dorm with cheap wine on the side.
In Manhattan. And people are actually looking forward to it.

And to this we've come!

Remember, on the East Coast, it's three-buck- not two-buck-chuck. Damn those infernal shipping costs!

According to the article in today's NYT's, the size of TJ will be "less than a third the size of the Whole Foods that opened last year at 4 Union Square South." That is not a large store, I believe the Food Emporium on 68th & Bdway is larger.

In Pasadena, California, where Trader Joe's empire began, they guys who work there all wear Hawaiian shirts, and they are all really good looking, too.

it may be smaller than the whole foods, but TJs is a whole lot cheaper as well. it doesn't matter how small the store is, their products are fantastic. the TJs i usually go to in CT is pretty darn small (at least half the size of the grocery store across the street) and they make excellent use of every inch. i'm certainly excited it's coming!

Chain store? Bad. Dorm? Bad. Cheap wine? Good!

It was obnoxious enough when the Whole Foods opened right across the street from the Green Market last year, does there really need to be a Trader Joes now right around the corner? Does anyone even know how the Green market's business has been affected by the WFs? Ah, who am I kidding, I'm bitching to a starfucks croud.

There have been reports the Farmers Market is doing fine. The addition of Whole foods has made the area more of a "food" destination with increased business for all.

They're opening I just rented an apt. in the city to a nice girl. She is transfering to the Union Square store. She supposed to start working Feb. 6 but she doesn't believe it will be ready by then.

Trader Joes stores are always small. And the ones I've been to in CA don't have employees wearing haiwaiian shirts, but one did have a boat hanging from a ceiling that had a bell that you could ring.

Maybe the competition will force the Green Market to get its act together. Its selection of produce is pretty limited.

The construction has been tough on the NYU Palladium Dorm's residents, with periods of no water or cable television... but now they'll have a wine store in their lobby!

Two Buck Chuck is $3 even in Arizona and Washington state...it's not only the shipping that increases the price, it's state alcohol taxes also, most states have taxes higher than California...but it's going to be nice getting TJ's cheap wine and cheap food without having to drive to TJ's in Westfield, NJ.

Have stuck my nose against the window every other day. The new floor was laid and then painted today. To my untutored eye, it appears that they need only put the refrigeration units in, and then the merch. Any others have a sense?

Trader Joe's Frozen Pizza -- Someone in Italy handtosses a pizza with fresh ingredients, someone else packages it up, someone else ships it across the Atlantic to the east coast, someone else drives it across the country to Seattle, someone else delivers it to my local Trader Joe's store, someone else sells it to me at the register for three dollars, and somehow, someone is making money off of this??? What? This is quite possibly the best pizza I've ever had outside of Italy and yes, it's three dollars at your local Trader Joe's. Make sure you buy the large flat one which says "Made in Italy" and you won't be disappointed.

Hey,
I am from Seattle but live in San Diego now. I have known the benefits of Trader Joe's for some time now. My good friend just moved to Dallas and she is bordering on a nervous breakdown because there is no TJ's there. Don't knock TJ's until you have tried it. They have great products, good prices and for me in California 2 buck Chuck that is actually good wine. Once the New Yorkers get a taste of TJ's they won't be complaining about it anymore. TJ's beats Whole Foods anyday and I still have money left over for a movie :)

I am originaly from California. I know that there was a Trader Joe's store in Long Beach, California. And if I remember right I think that there was a couple of other Trader Joe's stores in a few other small cities that were also close to the beach. This was around the years 1992 - 1993. I guess that this store is still in Long Beach, California today. I really do not know because I am in the Army now and I haven't seen the store in years. (I guess that I could do a computer search for the store....but is it really that important?) Well anyway, from what I remember about the Trader Joe's store in Long Beach was that it always seemed like a FAKE store to me. Yes I said the word FAKE. I do not know how else to explain that feeling that I have for Trader Joe's. Maybe the feeling that I have for Trader Joe's might seem strange to some other people but that was and still is the feeling that I always had and still have for Trader Joe's even today. I went in there a couple of times. The prices were always way too high and there was allot of crappy junk on the shelves that I never bought. And I do not really remember anyone ever saying any comments like; "Hey, lets go to Trader Joe's! It's such a great store!" or "I always stop and get something at Trader Joe's" or "I like Trader Joe's" or any other kind of positive comment about Trader Joe's at all. If anything, from what I can remember was that people in Southern California seemed to have a very bland and bored attitude about Trader Joe's that was more like: "Whatever" or "That's nice" or "Big - Deal, who cares?!?!". I have not thought about Trader Joe's at all until I started to read all the comments about the Trader Joe's store in New York City and I thought that I would add my two cents. Thank you.
