85 Adams Continues to Make Our Brains Explode

Monday, February 13, 2006, by Joey

2006_2_85adamssmall.jpgFirst, there were some reported sales problems at Boymelgreen's 85 Adams/Beacon Tower in Brooklyn. Then the prices went down. Way down. Then, suddenly, they went up. Way up. Then we got confused. Then we got this email:

I called the sales office for 85 Adams, and they told me that they did not increase the prices again. That they apparently had to post the higher prices because that was the most recent amendment. Don't know if it's true, but they were pretty set on the fact that the one bedrooms are the same price as offered a week ago at 30% discount.
Then we checked the Corcoran website again, and it looked like the prices on the one bedrooms were indeed down, but the prices on the bigger apartments were still up. Then we grabbed a teddy bear, climbed into bed, shed a few tears and wished upon a star that this mean and awful building would just go away.

Well, hopefully this time it is right. It's a shame that the building has such a bad rap, just because Corcoran is so a**-backwards. It's a shame that they can't get their act together- as the building looks like it will be nice... Though keep in mind you can't believe anything Corcoran promises you.

Damn. Is Dumbo hot or not? I was going to buy a new box of wine to celebrate the closing of my new Dumbo unit, but now I am not sure.

I love all the press my new hood is getting (the Post is my favorite paper!). I am buying black "Buddy Holly" glasses at Lenscrafters so I can fit in with all the peeps around here. So much different than the Island!

Peace.

#2- I'd love to know where you live... being that you are so harsh. How could Beacon be "horrendous"? That's a pretty powerful word for a building that looks pretty standard.

#4, I have to agree with #2--it's horrendous. It's about three feet from the Mahattan Bridge walkway, so you can really see the details of the architecture. The entire side of the building facing the river--i.e., the side with the views--has no windows; it looks like a river tunnel ventilation tower attached to a tennis court. And the other side--the side facing the highway--is fine, but nothing special.

Come on guys, Beacon is not so bad compared to most of the junk being constructed in Crooklyn...look at some of the alternatives. The Terraces on Court Street (hideous)in the asshole of Carroll Gardens, 60 Tiffany (nice on the outside, but cheap-feeling on the inside...Amana appliances? Don't they put those in Section 8 housing?), Tuscany Condos (Very ugly Fedders building in the asshole of Carroll Gardens), the anachronistic Greenehouse in Fort Greene (there goes that neighborhood), The Smith (Luxe and Pop? What does that mean? The detention center next door puts that one to shame.) The Nexus in Dumbo? (Overpriced glorified Fedders building...for those prices I don't just want central HVAC, I want air coming out of the Developer's Groups' collective asshole.) J Condo...The Joy of Living in Vinegar Hill (It's not technically in Dumbo, and it will be an unsightly monstrosity when completed in two years!)Oh and how about the Lofts on DeKalb? (What's next, the new luxury enclave called "Van Siclen Villas"...The Pride of Upper East New York and Ocean Hill Heights?) 70 Washington. (Has anyone seen the carpet picked for the hallways? Has anyone HEARD the noise from the cheapo windows? What do you do with a ginormous column in your living room?) 11 2nd Place (Who got permission for this one? Someone is giving someone blowjobs in the zoning department.) Eight by Eight in the Slope? (Crap location, ugly outside.) 678 Union Street. (Awkward layouts and where are the dishwashers?) 71 Carroll. (Hmm, looks like Red Hook to me. And it looks like some pretty shoddy construction. More Fedders! Woo hoo!) I'd rather have SARS than live in that junk. Boerum Heights...pretty bad, prettay prettay prettay bad. (Downtown Brooklyn sucks and so do these condos.) 14 Townhouses. (Answering a question nobody asked.) Good work Beacon Tower. My money is on you! Nice finishes, unique design, sound absorbing windows, non-offensive facade. In Dumbo Proper.

Obviously a Beacon Tower future resident

Let's summarize that enormous post. Your building sucks and mine is the best blah, blah, blah. These posts are extremely boring.

what a bizarre rant! and the fact that you're final architectural critique is 'good work beacon tower' make the whole thing seem even more ludicrous. reminds me of 'you're doing a heck of a job brownie'. perhaps you should consider a job with the bush administration spin machine.

I am certainly NOT a Beacon Tower resident. I think I forgot to mention Court Street Lofts...I wouldn't have taken a whore there in college.

By Art Vandelay at February 14, 2006 1:53 PM

14.

Nice rant... i actually think you make sense. How can someone judge Beacon tower and call it horrendous... without comparing to what else is out there. 70 Wash has creaky old warehouse floors, and an ugly lobby. How about ripping that apart?

L3...hardwood floors in the bathroom, real smart guys. Luquer Street? I'd rather live in Bushwick.

I love how this idiot thinks the building "will be nice." Nice? Come on dude, this building and others like it are ruining the aesthetic of an entire neighborhood. It doesn't fit dip shit. It looks nice to you because you probably just moved from Ohio and love the 'tall buildings.' I guess anything compared to the shack you moved from is nice. It's people like you who move to NY from some bumble F**k town because you spent one too many days hanging out on your front porch with one tooth flapping in the wind- - and thought the big city with big buildings was the hip thing to do. I hope you enjoy your massive, overpriced, intrusive building. Oh and good luck meditating as you suck in the exhaust of every gas guzzling car that crosses over the Manhattan Bridge.

beacon tower fits in well to the 'nabe. it is bold and square and stately, with a touch of stainless steel-looking facade to make it modern. fits in much better than the 30 story "sailboat" on the other side of the bridge. Jay Condo is a beautiful building in the wrong place. Boymelgreen really seemed to try and capture DUMBO.

Yeah, for all the Beacon hating, it's actually fitting in better than J. Put a Citibank logo on top of J and call it done.

I admit I'm looking in the area and considering Beacon. I was freaked out by the proximity to the bridge, but I'm looking at an upper unit and the soundproofing is really good. My bigger reservation is about walking out the front door - it's noisy outside. Any non-hating residents want to share thoughts on adjusting to the noise? (coming from carroll gardens rental)

thx
