Ikea Pimps Your Bus Stop

Well, this is certainly like no other bus stop we've ever seen. Looks like Ikea is trying to smooth over any Red Hook apprehension by outfitting some of the city's bus shelters with modern yet sensible furnishings. At this one on West 57th Street, there doesn't seem to be anyone standing guard. So, uh, who wants a free couch? More pics after the jump. Anyone seen these around town?

That's not a bus shelter, it's a $600/month studio apartment with lots of outdoor space.

I saw many smaller-scale Ikea installations (or "ad-stallations," to coin a phrase perhaps) in SOHO yesterday.

They included:

- dog bowl and wwatreing can adjacent to a fire hydrant
- "fliers" attached to lamp posts with simple frames
- a plastic bag dispenser and pooper scooper in a tree pit

I like this smart, eye-catching guerilla advertising. And yes, nothing was being guarded, and thus it was all up for grans. Even so, most people were just leaving it be.

No, seriously, this would be the best Craigslist ad ever -- $600/mo SUN-FILLED studio w. outdoor space. The city is your terrace! Revel in the open exposure and day-long light streaming into this designer studio! Ultra-convenient to transportation and the new Fairway! Live the Ikea lifestyle for less than you'd imagine!

Well, that gets my day off to a good start. Thanks!

Oh, sorry, this is just TOO exciting -- 57th St.? SoHo? Oh, this is just too much -- I guarantee anything like this on Craigslist would get you 20 phone calls in the space of 15 minutes. When will people start waking up to the fact that if something sounds too good to be true it's probably a scam or a lie of some sort?

He, you made me laugh Babs.

babs, we get it.

Well, that's a good thing -- it made me laugh, too, but what's sad is that's the first thing I thought when I saw the photo -- call it rental market fatigue.

8.

And yet Ikea hasn't done this to any of the bustops IN Red Hook...hmmmmm.
Of course I know the reason, but it sticks in my craw that Ikea will do nice things in other areas of the city but not in the neighborhood they are invading, er, I mean, improving.

It's OK, enough, I can contain myself now -- off to the real thing!

LOL - Those are awesome. I hope they don't get vandalized too soon. We could use some cheering up like this more often.

Although I did think at first that the first comment was perfect and was all that was needed, the second one from Babs did have some additional clever touches that I saw when I actually read it properly after my coming to my original conclusion.

I saw little dog bowls with a water can next to it on 5th avenue between 16th and 17th as well as numerous "flyers" in colorful picture frames. Now i'm concerned over those couches being smelly after the rain last night. I think it's clever though

i saw a bunch of stuff too, benches covered with cushions and coffee tables with magazines on them near madison sq park. think this's promoting an ikea exhibit near the javitz that's mocking the furniture fair theree. anyone go to either? any good?

By dblbble at May 19, 2006 10:29 AM

14.

steal away, those side tables are like $12 at the store, less than the cab fare it'd take to get that thing home.

Maybe IKEA could move their ad-stallations from the sidewalk and the into the street - as another protest against parking.

There's also a set up at a phone booth on the SouthWest corner of Prince and Mulberry.

This is an inspired advertising ploy as well as a little gift to the city. I say props to Ikea and welcome to Brooklyn.

This is part of a promotional event Ikea is staging for NY Design Week, they're also going to have an exhibit. There are details (and way less impressive photos) at www.everydayfabulous.com if you care. They should definitely do a subway car like in their TV campaign from a few years ago!

Maybe it's trash day on West 57th Street

what's funny is it's not even a bus stop. they put it up mid block and connected it to a big piece of metal.

i wonder if any of this stuff is well bolted down or even bolted at all. if not free furniture for everyone!

By armchair warrior at May 19, 2006 2:19 PM

21.

Just curious, but I want an update. How long did the stuff stay there before somebody stole it? Did anyone put it on Garbage Scout? Did IKEA clean up the mess themselves?

22.

Very clever. What agency did this?

By Cripsy at May 22, 2006 9:15 AM

Deutsch Inc.
