McCarren Pool Will Have Hipsters This Summer!

Thursday, February 22, 2007, by Robert

2007_02_Les%20Savvy.jpgHipsters can breathe a big sigh of relief. Brooklyn Vegan is reporting that Jelly NYC, which produced last summer's free shows at McCarren Pool, will be producing another series of shows this summer. They'll also have a benefit for the Open Space Alliance, which is said to be taking over management of the pool space next year with the ultimate goal of turning it into a pool again.

Whether this makes the Pool Aid crowd or other neighborhood people content is another matter. Pool Aid has been pushing for events that attract everyone, "not just hipsters." Some residents have been hoping for no concerts at all. In any case, another summer of music, dodgeball, burgers and brews at Brooklyn's water-free pool. More to come.

PoolAid loves the events that JellyNYC put on last summer and we're glad to see them back this summer and we're really happy to see they are collaborating with OSA on a fundraiser. We think that Jelly and Sens Productions helped raise the profile of the pool and opened the door for other community groups to put on events there this spring, summer & fall.

See you all Feb 27 at Union Pool, 7-9pm

OHHH YEAH!

hipsters? oh you mean young people who enjoy going to rock concerts. I guess "hipster" is a way to dismiss them as troublemakers or something. why don't you fucking retire that word already... New York City has been the "hipster" capitol of the world for decades. It's not something that coincided with the development of williamsburg... you fucking retards.

In the 60's, it was the "beatnicks".
In the 70's, it was the "hippies".
In the 80's, it was the "dead heads".
In the 90's, it was the "hipsters".
In the 21st Century, they call them "pan handlers".

Awesome! Free trucker hats and PBR for everyone! Just come with your favorite pair of skinny jeans and the interest from your trust fund, and we'll partyyyy until its brunch time.

Who's in?

I think half of the people who are making fun of hipsters are making fun of making fun of hipsters. When's the last time trucker hats were an actual stereotype ... 2002?

"hipster" is a term used to rile you up and get more comments down here, more page views and more advertising dollars.

I too think the "Hipster" term is really getting to be a bit much, but I do find it pretty remarkable that the majority of 20-30somethings in Williamsburg really do all have this same look going on. It does seem as if there is a strict, secret manifesto being followed.

As someone said in another thread, "hipsters" have long been a part of New York City for decades. But this particular faction seems to really rile people up like none that have come before them. Can anyone explain to me why this is? Are they really jerks? Is it the Converses and Buddy Holly glasses? I can't really imagine that the look itself could produce such a backlash given the Williamsburg crowd can hardly lay claim to being original in any way, shape or form.

I've been to places like Diner, Sweetwater, the Levee, and all the so-called Hipster Hangouts. I definitely stand out from that look, but I've never had any problems. Everyone seems nice enough.

What's the deal? (And I'm actually fishing for a thoughtful response here...)

#14- I think your comments display a sort of ethnocentrism. Also, you don't recognize the members of a group that you are not a part of as individuals.
Hip hop kids, wall street bankers, jocks, hippies- all look the same to me. I don't bring it up like it's some sort of fucking "miracle discovery" though.

They should have a "Homebuying for Hipsters" benefit concert at the Pool.

I am the "yuppy" in the burg and I have not had any problems with hipsters. I think people get frustrated because many of them are hanging around all day in coffee shops and bars. What people dont see is that many of them are working their asses off in their studios at 3 am. Hell I wish I was a hipster! It seems like a great life style to me... sans the 5 sf of tattoos required to be part of the club.

#18, maybe you should try being a hipster for a month first. I suggest a steady diet of soy-based food that taste like cardboard, coffee and PBR's, loose weight until you have less than 2% bodyfat, quit your yuppie job, and most importantly, don't bathe.
