NOLITA—The building at 290 Mulberry, whose dubious structural integrity we've written about before, partially collapsed Saturday afternoon. Word from two diffferent tipsters on the scene: a) "the building standing at the 290 mulberry street site partially collapsed into houston today. mulberry is shut down, as is eastbound houston at lafayette." b) "Collapse at Mulberry and houston, southeast corner. Lots of trucks. Fire's out now but half house remains." The mild irony of the FDNY using this building for training notwithstanding, let's accelerate those undulation plans for the site already, eh? [CurbedWire]
the building is in the process of being demo'ed now. there are bricks/rubble in the street. looks like it should be a clean(ish) hole by tomorrow night.
does anybody know if the asbestos remediation was completed before it fell? there were signs on the scaffolding notifying the neighbors that the bad stuff was in the building...
Funny that Sat. night they were doing am emergency demo for safety of people and neighboring buildings. Of course the idiot doing the demo decided to pull down a large branch off a tree (instead of cutting it) and almost put it through the building next door... Safety indeed. Also nice that they issued a stop work order of a building in danger of coming down, as opposed to a fix your freakin building order. What a surprise 2 weeks later it came crashing down, putting passer-bys in danger.... again safety must be a top concern to the city.
Does anyone know what's going in there?
Any updates on what is going on there?
