Here's the New Dutch Mustard 80 Met

Work is now underway on the site of the demolished Old Dutch Mustard Building in Williamsburg, with a construction worker joking that "they're going to be selling the ones without views for $1 million." That's probably a little on the high side, but we're definitely loving the tipster that his us off with the fully glory of the building that is known as 80 Met. The architect for the new project is GreenburgFarrow. Phase I has 124 units with 50 more to follow in Phase II.

I like this building very much. Still maintains it's warehouse look and feel from the outside - Good Job

warehouse look, loft like, industrial feel.... They should call it Potemkin Village.

Why do I get the feeling that whenever I see these condo's with exercise rooms, and pools and stuff, they remind me of a hotel?

Where exactly in Williamsburg is this place?

Metropolitan, between Wythe and Kent. You may remember the former five-story loft building (Dutch Mustard) with large windows that obviously had no place in this design, what with its five stories and large loft-like windows...

Curious to see how big the units are.

Is this area far from Manhatten? We're looking for a place for August to buy. My husband and I are moving down from the Albany area, (he got a job with Goldman Sachs that starts after graduation and summer fun!) Are there many coloreds in the area? Is it safe for women and children? We plan on getting pregnant.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Chelsea,
Not many coloreds in the hood, but lots of spics and dirty funny looking jews.
The neighborhood is safe for wowman, unless your'e menstrating, in that case all bets are off.

Secret history: Dutch Mustard was almost kept in a manufacturing zone, but the greedy, incompetent kiddo owners of that building lobbied the council hard to get it rezoned for residential. Then, post-rezoning, it got sold for 3x what it was worth, then (surprise!) it got demolished. Then this cheese goes up in it's place. I love that the architects are desperate to maintain the aura of industry even as they are complicit in the destruction of anything mixed-use about the neighborhood.

"Are there many coloreds in the area?"

Oh, my.

Don't know if he is a kiddo, but the owner of Dutch Mustard gave generously to Councilmember Yassky - you can look it up.

Wasn't the building vacant since the 70's? Just sitting there taking up space? If it was my building I would lobby to have it rezoned so it could be useful again. I wouldn't say that is "greedy". I say better to have some housing then a big, old empty industrial building. How was it sold for three times what it is worth? That doesn't make any sense. Is the developer going to loose money on the deal because he paid so much for the land? um, no... so they didn't pay three times what it is worth. The land was worth more than the building. That is what was purchased dumb ass.

WBer you said it so more eloquently than I could. They tear down a beautiful piece of industrial architecture for this piece of shite? Oy veh. What's next, the Domino Sugar Factory? Sigh.

Chelsea, I'd suggest Brownsville or East New York as up and coming neighborhoods just waiting for Goldman Sachs people like you. Perfect for raising a family.

It's GreenbErg Farrow. And they're better known for designing malls, as well as every Home Depot in America.

seriously chelsea,

the fact the you LIVE means there is no hope in the world. "colored" are you from alabama, seriously? "graduating" jesus, shouldn't you have the experience of renting or knowing a neighborhood first? "getting pregnant" what are you like 26? "Manhatten" you should probably learn how to spell it before you move down from the woods.

love williamsburg

ps, please don't move here, you wont like it, and we wont like you.

See those gigantic industrial tanks in the rendering, the ones a few blocks away on the river front and behind the invisible artist sitting at his easel (like we all do in Williamsburg)? Most renderings/sales materials would put trees in their place, and tout 'local' services 10 blocks away... New broker honesty?

By Anonymous at May 4, 2007 9:52 AM

20.

Chelsea, you might want to move a few blocks closer to Radiac to ensure you birth a true monster.

Funny post.

I had a visiting teaching job at SUNY Albany - oh, I'm sorry, University at Albany - for one year. Wasn't such a rarity to hear people in the area throw out the word "colored" like they were still playing in "Iggy's House" with Judy Blume circa 1969. And yeah, they sincerely thought they were using a "nice" word.

Some people seem to think the Chelsea posting is serious. I assumed it was a post just to push people's buttons - it's so over the top.

The new building is not bad but the old Dutch Mustard should have been preserved. It was a handsome building. People have no sense.
