Holy Homes! 20 Chic Converted Churches Seeking a Buyer

View as Map

If there's one thing real estate nerds love, it's modern homes carved from buildings with fascinating backstories, particularly when there's gut-reno potential lurking within interesting bones. Churches, especially, are great for home-conversion buffs, and luckily there's an abundance of homes that lived their first lives in far holier ways. Stained-glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and sumptuously open floor plans make them appealing to folks looking for a more unconventional living space, and while everybody wants a single-family mansion—how about this modern $15.25M number hacked from a Romanesque church, for example?—it seems a touch impractical to sit and wait for the requisite riches. And so, behold this map of 20 fairly affordable converted churches. That living room above? That's a chic condo in Indianapolis, where one can buy a piece of landmark for as little as $200K.

The good news: this three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom Boston triplex received a six-figure price chop. The bad news: even with the $149K price cut, the 1,660-square-foot condo rings in at over a mil. The condo, nestled behind the original stone façade from 1891, asks $1.05M.

Avalon, Calif.

This 1929 duplex on Catalina Island, the tiny holiday spot off of the coast of Los Angeles, was designed by Hans Walner to look like a chapel in Santa Croce, Italy, or so says Curbed LA. The unit's listed for $1.88M, more than three times what the place went for two years ago.

Seattle

This partially renovated six-bedroom, three-bathroom house has got all the staples of a converted church home: stained glass, steepled windows, stadium-style seating (?), an awkward amount of open space. But here's the best part: There's a "legit bell tower," according to Curbed Seattle. The listing asks $789,000, not too shabby for 6,300 square feet.

Chicago

Chicago's single-family converted-church home, listed for $1.429M, boasts 6,000 square feet with four bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, two kitchens, a gym, and, as Curbed Chicago so eloquently puts it, "a license to do naughty things in God's old digs."

This loft in NYC's Greenwich Village is owned (but not for long!) by cookbook author Betty Fussell. The 1,351-square-foot space, tucked away in a 1846 Greek Revival church, has five skylights, glorious exposed beams, and a porch with Doric columns. The ask? $1.695M.

Louviers, Colo.

This small New England-style church plunked in the middle of Colorado is on the market for $445K. The exclamation points in the brokerbabble are laid on a little thick, but the claim that one can "look out the window and witness wild life!" doesn't seem to be hyperbolic: there are a couple of deer chilling on the front yard in one of the listing photos.

Toronto

The only international listing of the bunch, this Toronto three-bedroom includes a chef's kitchen, media room, and 5,000-bottle wine cellar. Not really sure why it's touted as "Manhattan in Toronto," considering, as previously noted, its list price of $3.5M is only a fraction of what a similar listing would go for in a stylish part of Manhattan.

Watertown, Mass.

This condo in Watertown, Mass., looks almost disappointingly normal from the inside—no lofty, slanty ceilings, for one—but the outside, with the stone façade and big windows, has enough old-timey churchiness to compensate. The three-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom place is asking a cool $949,000.

Oh, Texas. How oft must we be tempted by your cheap real estate? This nigh-15,000-square-foot manse with 11 bedrooms and an art studio (in the old choir room) all slides in under the million-dollar mark. The Dallas property is a duplex, and listing is for both units. That's a lot of house for $950K.

Somerville, Mass.

This Somerville rental has ceilings that "soar like a phoenix rising form Arizona," according to Curbed Boston. OK, so maybe the language is a little flowery, but the three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom triplex has ceilings as high as 65 feet in some places. The monthly rent is $6,750 a month.

San Francisco

St. Joseph's Catholic Church in San Francisco isn't quite converted just yet, but some pretty cool plans are in the works. For instance, one loft will actually be located inside the dome, according to Curbed SF.

Chicago

Here's a fairly huge Chicago conversion condo on the market for a dollar under $700K. The three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom condo is actually pretty sleek inside, if one can disregard the bad case of over-furnishing. There's exposed brick, hardwood floors, and some sort of lovely exposed ductwork.

Philmont, N.Y.

Get out of the major cities, and behold!: Converted churches for much, much cheaper. Take, for example, the Claverack Brick Church in Philmont, N.Y., on the market for $249,000. The place has 3,000-plus square feet and a bell tower.

Brooklyn, N.Y.

This tri-level condo situated in Landmark Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., asks $1.65M for the two-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Cobble Hill.

Louisiana, Mo.

In the Mississippi River town of Louisiana, Mo., sits this four-bedroom, two-bathroom single-family home carved out a 1868 church. It's $137K price tag is a breath of fresh air, but the brokerbabble is not particularly reassuring. One hears an alarm whenever a listing encourages buyers to "live adventurously!"

Bellevue, Ky.

This townhouse in Bellevue, Ky., is asking $219.5K. The condo has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and, most importantly, some large stained-glass windows.

Holyoke, Mass.

This 1885 converted Victorian church in Holyoke, Mass., is asking $249K. The Lincoln-Street single-family home has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and, honestly, a rather off-putting entryway. It's all very 1970s, plus the stairs are awkward and it looks there's still a pew hanging around, and not in a cool, Brooklyn kind of way.

Red Springs, N.C.

The decor could use some work, but this three-bedroom has the basics, including giant steepled windows and cathedral ceilings. Plus, the Red Springs, N.C., listing is only is listed for a relatively affordable $175K.

Chicago

What this listing lacks in Cathedral ceilings it makes up in large living room windows. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom Chicago condo is a little blah, sure, but at $374K, it's a relatively affordable option for urbanites.

Indianapolis

Available in this rather stunning Indianapolis landmark are condos ranging from a one-bedroom for $200K to a three-bedroom for just under $500K. Standout features include ornamentation on huge windows, vaulted ceilings, and an "uninterrupted skyline view," or so says the brokerbabble.
