In the last few years the glut of high-design hostels—you know, $30 bunk-bed accommodations people actually want to stay in—have pushed budget hospitality into the oontz-oontzy realm of nightclubs, with modern, effervescent design geared toward a younger, more adventurous traveler. Adding to this growing list is Generator Hostels, a European strain of budget destinations materializing in cities like Berlin, London, and Dublin. Each location seems to be following the modern hotel guidebook to a T, with quirky things like hot-pink velveteen arm chairs at the Venice outpost, a jumble of upside-down lampshades (above) in Barcelona, and patchwork furniture in Copenhagen.
