Designed by Phillip Liederbach of the Chicago-based firm Liederbach & Graham Architects and filled to its luscious brim by fabulously high-end interior designer Steven Gambrel, this eye-popping Chicago townhouse, featured in the February House Beautiful, blends the feel of classic architecture—the iconic 1920 and '30s designs of David Adler were an inspiration—with rather audacious colors, antiques, and textiles. The couple who commissioned the home asked for a space to comfortably accommodate their kids, but, with their willingness to embrace "bold moves," got in return a bright, cheery antidote to the city's long and dreary winters.
Standouts here include a 1940s-inspired entryway, complete with a black-and-white marble floor ("It's graphic, punchy, and it complements the large room," Gambrel explains), vibrant red carpeting, and a custom chandelier; a peacock blue-lacquered library lacquered with blue club chairs and a blue sofa ("It's at the front of the house so it creates a rich, intimate, moody space right when you walk in"); an bright, apricot-colored dining room; a living room that has a vintage feel thanks to its wood panels and a tufted purple couch; and an incredible barrel-vaulted kitchen with a tiled ceiling and oversize iron lanterns.
