Michigan's Second Shipping Container Home Has Landed

It looks like Michigan has jumped on the shipping container bandwagon. The Detroit News recently reported that a second home in Michigan made (partially) out of the large, hardworking steel boxes recently finished construction. Local firm ModEco Development constructed the 2,250-square-foot, three-bedroom home in Royal Oak for a price tag of $430,000, using five 40-foot containers, and two 20-foot containers.

The Detroit News reported that it took around a year to finish construction, as the shipping containers were fabricated on-site.

However, this isn't the Wolverine State's first building to run with the trend — earlier this year, Michigan got its first multi-family container home in Corktown. Plans for future developments have also been floated since 2012, though have yet to come to fruition.

ModEco partner Drake Boroja told The Detroit News that building with the pre-loved steel containers, is "safer, stronger, and about 10 percent to 15 percent cheaper to build than traditional homes." Maintenance costs are reportedly much lower, and the structure is almost entirely fire resistant.

While he didn't say the firm was planning on building similar properties just yet, it wouldn't be unlikely. According to Boroja, the response thus far has been totally positive.

Love 'em or hate 'em, more adapted shipping containers this way. >>
