Japanese architect Kazuyasu Kochi revels in playing with space, reframing perceptions with clever angles and unexpected layouts. A previous project that interrupted the normal flow of a boxy suburban home with a hexagonal void has been one-upped with this colorful cut-away. Once a series of small apartments in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba—hence the name Apartment House—this space had its interior dividing walls ripped out and replaced with bright, asymmetric planes of plywood, a radical design barely hinted at by the drab exterior. The colorful result is a polygonal playground for kids, but may be a slightly distracting location for a home office.
