Radical Tiny Apartment Concept Hides the Bed on the Ceiling

Three years ago at the London Design Festival, Simon Woodroffe, designer-entrepreneur and founder of the Yo! Sushi and YOTEL chains, presented a provocative concept for a compact apartment: the Yo! Home, a flashy 800-square-foot dwelling that had, among other pop-out furniture and storage, a motorized bed that drops down from the ceiling. Mesmerizing as it was, the setup looked more like a nightclub than a practical apartment. Recently, however, Woodroffe shared the latest iteration of the Yo! Home, which offers many of the same futuristic, transforming furnishings with a more streamlined, elegant look. And in keeping up with the times, the new prototype has shrunk to just 430 square feet.

The updated model, set entirely on a raised platform, features a drop-down bed that Yo! Home claims is "thinner, smaller, and faster than ever," a "pocket kitchen" hidden in the wall of cabinets, plus a dining table and storage space that pops out from the floor. According to the blog Life Edited, which got in contact with Yo! Home Managing Director Jack Spurrier via email, this concept will be incorporated into 24 prefab units in an upcoming building in Manchester, England.

While this concept certainly screams efficiency, is it really much more functional than that 86-square-foot Paris pad that invites you to sleep in cupboards?
