Extreme Makeover Revives Drab 1970s Chicago Home

New, 19 comments

Over in Chicago's lakeside Edgewater neighborhood, an extreme makeover of a dingy 1970s home proves that even homes considered teardowns can be salvaged to some degree. Completed by local design-build firm Nicholas Design Collaborative, the Periscope House—named for the sleek mod volume that cantilevers slightly over the front yard—expands the original two-bedroom house into a four-bedroom contemporary courtyard residence. While the firm kept the existing structure's floor, roof, and brick garden walls, the interiors are pretty spanking new (and true to early renderings), featuring large sliding glass doors connecting ground-floor living areas to the exterior.

The rear of the house, once an uninspiring wall of brown, now boasts colorful cement board panels and an outdoor dining area. On the other end of the backyard, there's also a new three-car garage clad in grey cement board panels. Take a closer look.
