China Demands That All New Buildings Be Attractive, Not Weird

New buildings must be "pleasing to the eye"

The central government of China, a country with more than a few delightfully odd buildings, has decided that it is done with all that and issued a directive demanding that people stop constructing weird, ugly buildings. Via the New York Times:

A directive issued on Sunday by the State Council, China’s cabinet, and the Communist Party’s Central Committee says no to architecture that is "oversized, xenocentric, weird" and devoid of cultural tradition. Instead, buildings should be "suitable, economic, green and pleasing to the eye."

China currently has ten replica White Houses (including one prison). So, on the one hand, sure, they probably don't need any more. But on the other, do they really want to deprive the world of this?
