How to Curate a Design Fair: An Interview With Sight Unseen

The founders of online magazine Sight Unseen, Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov, tell us about OFFSITE

If you've ever wondered how the people who run design fairs choose what goes in, Monica Khemsurov and Jill Singer, co-founders of Sight Unseen and co-curators of New York Design Week's Sight Unseen OFFSITE (coming up May 13-16 and free to attend) laid their secrets bare on the most recent episode of our podcast, The Curbed Appeal.

So, what goes into deciding whether a designer's work is a fit for the show? "It’s really: if it’s new and if we like it," says Khemsurov, of hers and Singer's curation process. (They do chafe somewhat at the word "curate"—"It just became so ubiquitous," says Singer, although Khemsurov points out that "If anyone should get to use it should be us.")

So, if you want to hear more about that, Sight Unseen's fantastic Creative Women at Work series, and why the United States is so averse to contemporary design in general, give the episode a listen.
