Today’s House of the Day will appeal to modern design enthusiasts as well as traditionalist: The Darien, Connecticut home has been put up for sale by John McPhee, the president of Design Within Reach, and was featured in Cottages & Gardens in 2014.
John and his wife Lulu bought the 1937 Colonial in 2002 and proceeded to undertake an ambitious renovation, with the help of Westport-based architect Tasos Kokoris, that doubled the square footage and updated the look of the home to have a more contemporary and inviting feel. The result is a relaxed home with a natural flow among the spaces that makes it a fantastic place for entertaining.
The 9,500-square-foot home is asking $5.595 million and has five ensuite bedrooms, four half-bathrooms, a spacious chef’s kitchen, media room, and his-and-hers offices.
But it’s the luxurious amenities that really make the residence a stand-out: They include an elevator to access the home’s four stories, a wine cellar and tasting room with panels of burgundy Edelman Leather (John was its former COO) lining the walls, floor, and ceiling, a plunge pool and spa, a stream-fed fountain pond, snow-melt path and radiant-heated stone patio, and a state of the art geothermal heating system.
Still, the pièce de résistance has got to be the all-season, screened-in great room, which has a soaring cathedral ceiling done up in dark wood. Take a look around.
