Curbed seeks longform journalism

Here’s how to pitch

Curbed is seeking pitches for longform and narrative stories from freelance writers. Curbed’s focus is home: architecture, design, real estate, and urban planning. We’re looking for story pitches that dig deep on these topics, whether they are profiles, stories about building types we haven’t seen before, personal essays, analyses of popular trends, or deeply reported pieces. For examples, take a look at our longform archive.

We’re interested in stories that will appeal to a national audience, even if the backbone of the story is a local narrative. Most of our features run between 3,000 and 6,000 words.

And yes, we pay. Competitively.

There are a few things we like to learn from writers when considering a story:

  • What the story is, why it’s a fit for Curbed, and the expected length
  • How you plan to report the story, who you’ve talked to so far, and what your access is to additional sources
  • Whether this topic has been covered elsewhere and in what way, and why Curbed should cover this story now
