Hey there. I’m a big fan of this column and of everything related to homes and home-owning and I was wondering, purely out of curiosity: what do you do if you have a big blood stain on your carpet? There’s no particular reason I’m asking this — I just thought it might be interesting to know how you remove a hypothetical blood stain that has had approximately four hours to sink in and covers an area of about one square foot. Are there special, deep-cleaning methods that you could do to remove all evidence of the blood, so that if for some reason somebody tried to DNA test fibers from the carpet they wouldn’t be able to find anything? Again, just curious for no specific reason.

Wow, so great to hear from a genuine fan with a real interest in house cleaning. Most people just write to me when they have an actual problem that they want me to solve for them, so it’s great to just have a casual, non-specific chat about this kind of stuff with another enthusiast. To answer your super weird question (How did you come up with all that? Crazy!) the best thing for getting rid of blood stains is ammonia.
