Modern home gets a high-end look with low-cost materials

We’re gaga over the design details of this compact family home in Melbourne. Designed by BENT Architecture, the residence uses low-cost materials like corrugated metal and common timber siding in an especially artful way to create a unique and high-end look.

From the street, the house’s boldest design choice is its striking roof, which reinterprets and extends the typical pitched roofline into an angled, sculptural form covering the entire second story. Three rectangular windows are arranged to break up the expanse of metal without compromising the visual balance of the structure.

Along the lower roof edge, a continuous recessed line of facia helps give the impression that the roof is floating. The rest of the exterior is clad in common grey siding punctuated by vertical slats of teak-stained hardwood.

Inside, the home is arranged into quiet spaces like bedrooms and active spaces like the living room and kitchen—separated by an interior courtyard.

The visual trope of the vertical wood batten is cleverly continued inside with wooden edges and frames extending from floor to ceiling. Large sliding glass windows in the living room open up the space to both the interior courtyard and backyard.
