1920s bungalow gets gorgeous modern renovation

A quirky 1920s bungalow in LA’s Echo Park got a impressive modern makeover from the architects at Mexico City-based studio Productora. The interior was completely remodeled with a minimal, modernist vibe.

The original basement was excavated to create a new open living space on the ground level, complete with polished concrete floors and a floating staircase featuring a saw-tooth profile up to the first floor. The interior was kept simple with white walls and blonde wood trim.

At the back of the home, the architects created a boxy new addition to provide ample natural light and create two tiers of shaded porch. The addition’s blue-painted frame is essentially a large metal grid of six stacked cubes.

Two of the cubes are sheathed on two sides with glazing. One of those sides is a door that can fold to open up the room to the outside. The other four boxes are open, creating two sets of shaded outdoor spaces. The overhangs also protect the rear of the home from strong afternoon sun.
