Tour Chicago’s Robey hotel, a restored Art Deco stunner

The hotel takes over what was former known as the Northwest Tower in Wicker Park

Open for just over a year now, the Robey hotel in Chicago’s Wicker Park takes over the newly refurbished and restored Northwest Tower, a historic Art Deco office building that was designed in the 1920s by Perkins, Chatten, and Hammond.

The 203-foot-tall tower preserves many of its stunning details, including the elevator’s gorgeous brass doors, the lobby’s geometric marble surfaces, and the ornamental relief surrounding the tower’s spire. These elements combine with modern touches like frosted glass and midcentury modern furniture (Belgian studios Nicolas Schuybroek Architects and Marc Merckx Interiors helmed the interior design) to create a contemporary boutique hotel offering 69 rooms and several food and drink options.

But the crowning achievement of the Robey, which is named after the street that is now known as Damen Avenue—the hotel presides over the intersection of Damen, Milwaukee, and North Avenues—may be the unobstructed views it provides of the Chicago skyline. And like any hotel worth its salt, the Robey offers a stylish rooftop lounge from which to enjoy Chi-Town.
