From the Wes Anderson-inspired palette of millennial pink and sagey green to the arches, terrazzo, and marble counters, this new cafe in the Southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu is an eye-pleasing summary of all that was trendy in 2017.
Designed by Melbourne studio Biasol, the Budapest Cafe is chock full of whimsical details. The terrazzo tiered seating area not only has an original Eero Arnio Bubble Chair, but also a pink ball pit.
Zig zags play a starring role, found in the bannister leading to a mezzanine level, and detailing at the bar and on another wall. Large arches on opposing sides of the space provide satisfying symmetry and a way to to frame recessed storage, while smaller arches create doorways and the backs of seating in the tiered area. The terrazzo and curve craze follows through to the eye-popping bathroom as well.
