Sweden’s Icehotel is back, this time with a ‘Monstera’ room

Sweden’s famous Icehotel has returned for its 28th edition, drawing visitors to its impressive wintry architecture built each year from over one million cubic feet of snow and thousands of ice blocks hulled over from the local Torne River.

Now open in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, this year’s Icehotel invited 36 artists from 17 countries to create a main hall, ice ceremony hall for weddings and other events, and 15 new “art suites,” including one referencing refugees’ journey across the Mediterranean Sea (“Daily Travelers”) and another dedicated to the plant of the moment (“Monstera”).

In addition to these seasonal rooms, which will melt back into the river in the spring, there is also a recently completed section of the hotel that will stay open year round, cooled by solar energy.
