Well this is nice (and perhaps a bit unexpected): Los Angeles architect Barbara Bestor of Bestor Architecture, whose work we’ve admired many times on our pages, designed this modern home for Mike D of the Beastie Boys.

In a piece he penned for the March issue of Architectural Digest, Mike “D” Diamond tells the tale of his family’s decision to decamp from L.A.’s Los Feliz neighborhood to live closer to the beach.

They settled on a property in Malibu that comprised what Diamond colorfully calls an “agglomeration of ramshackle structures” and “an eyesore fence.” Diamond’s wife Tamra ripped up the fence and they called Bestor in—with whom they were working on another home in Brooklyn—to work her magic on connecting the disparate volumes and making them a harmonious whole for themselves and their two kids.

Now, the house features a sleek butterfly roof and a new common area with radiant heating and better access to a terrace and yard.
