The typical Australian home is some 2,032 square feet, topping the list of average home sizes found in a new survey from listing service, Point2Homes, which consulted 29,000 property owners in nine countries around the world: the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, and, of course, Australia.
While the U.S. came for average home size with 1,901 square feet, American houses tend to have fewer occupants and therefore more living space per person. When occupancy is taken into account, Americans lead the pack with roughly 656 square feet of living space per resident, beating out every other country in the study including Canada (618), Australia (549), and Germany (492).
When respondents were asked what size home they’d like to have, most Americans said between 1,501 square feet and 2,000 square feet. Meanwhile, folks in Australia, Mexico, and the U.K. preferred even larger homes, at more than 2,501 square feet. Those in Canada, Brazil, Germany, France, and Spain tended to prefer slightly smaller abodes in the range of 1,000 to 1,500 square feet.
