King Henry VIII’s honeymoon castle lists for $10.3M

This isn’t your typical castle: Besides the glamorous rooms, suits of armor, and extensive grounds, Thornbury Castle was also once home to King Henry VIII of England and his second queen, Anne Boleyn. Henry VIII, who was notorious for beheading anyone who crossed him, including Boleyn, honeymooned at Thornbury Castle, which is now up for sale.

The Tudor-style castle, now a hotel, recently hit the market for £8.5 million (about $10.3 million), the Telegraph reports. It is located in Thornbury, a market town in Gloucestershire, England. Tudor interiors remain a prominent feature of the castle, as well as the extensive Tudor gardens. The gardens and grounds cover a total of 15.4 acres of land.

The castle is rich with history. It was built during Henry VIII's reign by Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham. After Stafford was executed for high treason, the king took over the property and stayed there with Boleyn for 10 days in 1535. Following the death of the king’s daughter Mary I, the castle fell into disrepair for over two centuries until it was taken over and renovated in the 1850s.

Today, it’s a 28-room luxury hotel with a restaurant and event space. Ruins of the former curtain wall can still be found adjacent to the driveway.
