For the ultimate desert retreat, look no further than this 1950s stone cabin in Whitewater, California, just a few miles northwest of Palm Spring. Located in Snow Creek, a tiny bohemian village of just 39 dwellings, Hermit Springs, as it is known, was once home to Peter Russ, a wood carver and hermit, who died in 1952. It was also rumored to have been a stagecoach stop.

One of the first hand-built structures in the area, the 714-square-foot one bedroom has since been carefully restored and updated and features solid rough hewn beamed ceilings, mesquite floors, a contemporary kitchen with stainless steel appliances and farmhouse sink, two stone fireplaces, and a travertine Roman-style bath tub.

Located near the end of a single two-mile road that leads to the enclave, at 15835 Falls Creek Road, to be exact, the home’s most stunning feature is, of course, the magnificent backdrop of the San Jacinto National Monument just beyond it. It’s listed for $539,000 after a $10,000 price cut.
