David Adjaye designs sculptural speaker for Master & Dynamic

The home speaker is constantly being reimagined by designers lately, and this time, it takes on a distinctly architectural air courtesy of one Sir David Adjaye, the knighted British architect whose portfolio includes Washington D.C.’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture and some of the most sublime modern homes in London.

Created for New York audio brand Master & Dynamic, Adjaye’s MA770 uses a first-of-its-kind concrete composite material, which gave him the ability to take the home speaker to sculptural new heights. The design features a more familiar boxy appearance on the front, but surprises with a curvy, triangular base at the rear.

The material also has acoustic benefits. Master & Dynamic claims the concrete composite’s dampening properties are five times better than wood and ten times better than plastic. For a boost of high-tech appeal, the unit can pair with another speaker over WiFi, as well as Google Chromecast. Intrigued? That’ll be $1,800, please. Orders are now open online.
