Concrete home brings wild geometry to lush valley

Inspired by the surrounding countryside, the U Retreat from South Korea’s IDMM Architects—who also designed this stunning seaside cafe— contrasts nature’s organic forms with sharp lines and angular cantilevers. It almost looks as though the compound’s structures are craning their necks upwards to get a better view of the surrounding mountains.

The four-building retreat in Korea’s Sari-Gol Valley was designed to offer an escape for visitors to relax and experience nature. The simple interiors of these multi-level abodes flow into one another with a sense of openness. Outdoor lounge spaces abound, some topped with intersecting concrete beams—a modern canopy. A large swimming pool and terrace offers more outdoor enjoyment.
