In a clever case of digital placemaking, new Chicago hostel The Hollander leverages the phenomenon Curbed’s Urbanism Editor Alissa Walker explored last year: adventure-planning via Instagram. The inn occupies a historic furniture warehouse in the Wicker Park neighborhood, serving up photoshoot-ready interiors designed by the French studios Ciguë and Delordinaire, which custom-designed most of the furniture inside.

But don’t expect a subdued and lonesome stay at the Hollander. Guests checking into the hotel’s industrial-style modern rooms are encouraged to meet over Instagram before sharing the space, and the Hollander happily promotes itself as a haven for social media types—the sort of place to see and share.

The open lobby is ringed with exposed walls and populated with modern wood furniture. A coffee bar and long wooden table provides ample invitation to hang out or do work.

The Hollander has 12 private rooms and eight shared rooms for a grand total of 66 beds. All of the rooms are cleverly furnished with built-ins made of pipe and plywood. Each one comes equipped with lockable cabinets, benches, coat hooks, and reading lamps.
