This glass-and-steel home in Holladay, Utah, was designed in 1957 by architect Dean Gustavson as a personal residence and went on to receive an Architectural Record award for excellence in house design in 1960. It is now on the market for the second time ever and has been carefully restored and upgraded by the current owners—a preservationist and an architect.

The glass box is formed by Modernist elements including a flat roof, steel frame, floor-to-ceiling insulated glass windows, and brick walls. Gustavson envisioned for him and his family a private yet open residence that would allow them to “gain the view and intimacy with the surrounds and the seasons,” he told Architectural Record, and the home accomplishes just that.

Unfurling on a single level measuring 2,346 square feet, the dwelling comprises four bedrooms and two baths, one of which is contained in a central, tight, “closet core” along with the kitchen and utility room. According to Architectural Record’s book on the twenty best houses of 1960, the element is treated as a piece of furniture, around which four areas flow: entrance, living area, kitchen-dining space, and the family multi-use room. The bedrooms are located on one end of the house, and the den on the other.

As for interior materials, lacquered walnut woodwork, ceramic tile, and travertine flooring further connect the abode to nature, and several outbuildings—including a bomb shelter!—a pergola, and four-car carport offer integrated indoor-outdoor living. Located at 2044 E. Hedgewood Court, it’s offered at $825,000.
