Renovated Victorian home combines old bones with modern decor

This gut renovation of a Victorian home in Coburg, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, is the stuff of dreams. Entrepreneur James Tutton purchased the spectacular 1890 house “somewhat spontaneously,” according to The Design Files, and teamed up with local architect Clare Cousins to completely refurbish the space.

While they retained key period elements like the ornate exteriors and some crown molding and woodwork, they gutted much of the building. Still, Tutton preserved the scale of the historic house, highlighting its volume and high ceilings by “softening” the interiors, imbuing them with white and pale pink walls and accents of blue and green.

As for the decor, Tutton opted for clean-lined, modern, and otherwise basic pieces that complement the bright and understated space, letting it breathe and open up to the outdoors by way of tall windows and sliding glass doors. Still, there are several pops of color thanks to accessories, artwork, fixtures, and objets—not to mention that bold kitchen cabinetry—that animate the home.
