Location: La Cañada Flintridge
Price: $2,995,000
An ad in a local paper described John C. Lindsay’s 1957 Research House in La Cañada Flintridge (a city in Los Angeles County) as a “fascinating site to see … a hillside house with hundreds of practical up-to-the-minute ideas for better living!”
Completed in 1957 as the fourth in a series of House & Patio and Architectural Products magazines’ “field test laboratory” houses, the flashy party pad saw an estimated 250,000 visitors, but, according to Steve Vaught of Hollywood history blog Paradise Leased, it “earned no lasting honors from an architectural standpoint.”
Now the intriguing home, which has been in the same family since 1960, is on the market for the first time ever, giving us a chance to glimpse its practically time capsule-like interiors—originally decorated and furnished by Barker Bros., some of whose items still remain.
Measuring approximately 3,000 square feet, the broad structure cantilevers over a steep hill and features expansive floor-to-ceiling windows on the main open-plan level that frame dramatic mountain vistas.
Here, a living area laid with green carpeting and chevron floors incorporates a massive stone hearth with metal detailing and a conversation pit of sorts, a dining area, a kitchen partially enclosed in a wooden cube, and tongue-and-groove beamed ceilings that slope upward toward the view.
The three bedrooms and bathrooms feature what appears to be original wallpaper—some of it metallic and far out, but that only adds to the kitschy charm of this place. Yes, it will need a lot of work, but it’ll be worth it.
The approximately one-acre property also boasts incredible outdoor entertaining. An “Anthony” pool, designed to look like the state of California (!), is set within a large concrete patio that is surrounded by a patch of grass and a cantilevering wooden deck (not to mention the balcony wrapping around the house). There’s also an outdoor kitchen with colorful cabinets and a bathroom with shower for washing off after a dip.
Located at 1401 Sugar Loaf Drive, it’s offered at just under $3 million. There’s a lot to take in, but start with the photos below.
