Camille Walala’s colorful new exhibition is a Memphis design rabbit hole

Memphis design is having a(nother) moment, with a new retrospective of the work of Ettore Sottsass being mounted at New York’s Met Breuer next week and Memphis designs taking Milan by storm at last April’s Fuorisalone.

Now comes this fun installation, “Walala x Play,” by London designer and artist Camille Walala, who created a Memphis-esque maze for the English capital’s Now Gallery. Combining stripes, dots, and confetti-like dashes on punchy, primary-color backgrounds, Walala’s work is a visual jolt reminiscent of Sottsass’s riotously polychromatic and geometric work, which—though not particularly beloved in its time—inspired a generation of designers and makers.

The labyrinthine installation, art directed by Julia Jomaa and with architectural design by Ioana Lupascu, heightens the surreality of the mix of pattern and color. Now Gallery plans to delight and confuse visitors even more by “subtly changing” elements in the installation while it’s up for the public, according to Dezeen.
