Curbed is now hiring a data journalist

Seeking an experienced reporter with a zeal for telling stories with numbers

We want a self-starter who will proactively seek out and crunch data, resulting in exclusive stories—in addition to collaborating with others on infographics, shareable graphics for social, and dynamic animations for video. If that sounds like you, submit your application here.

At Curbed, data informs the housing market, home prices, who lives where, cost of living, and where people move, all facets that relate to how people live in cities across the US. The successful candidate will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and reporting data sources to produce and visualize compelling stories in the world of cities, architecture, and housing.

You must enjoy collaboration and have a built-in tuning fork for turning numbers into a narrative. The role requires active researching, planning, pitching, and submitting story ideas for publication on our flagship site, as well as relevant Curbed city sites. The role is an excellent one for someone interested in visual storytelling and looking to spearhead investigative reporting for a growing media outlet.

Responsibilities
—Analyze data sets (market reports, reports from public companies and city governments) in order to proactively report and tell stories relevant to Curbed’s topic areas
—Produce regular flow of articles for publication on Curbed.com, Curbed city sites, and Curbed partner platforms
—Collaborate with animators on video team for video-specific assets based on data reporting
—Collaborate with engagement team to distill data reportage into digestible takeaways for sharing

Requirements
—3+ years of relevant editorial experience, with a focus on data-driven reporting and the ability to meet deadlines
—The ability to work successfully within a team and across teams in a larger publishing environment
—Basic web skills (HTML, CSS, Javascript) and solid design sensibility
—Hands-on experience using data-visualization tools and technologies tools to help display data

Bonus skills
—Front-end developing/engineering skills with a focus on data visualization
—Statistical knowledge
—Experience using SQL, R, Python and/or Ruby
—An interest in city, architecture, housing, and market news

Curbed’s data journalist will work centrally, focused primarily on our .com site, while collaborating with video, engagement, and 14 city site teams. This is a full-time position that can be based in one of Vox Media’s primary offices: New York, Washington D.C., and San Francisco.

Apply to be Curbed’s first-ever staff data journalist here.
