New app puts building codes at your fingertips

Different towns, states, and countries have different rules and regulations when it comes to buildings—some more complex than others. Failure to comply with local codes can lead to dangerous construction or expensive fixes to correct the mistakes. But a new app, UpCodes, promises to help architects and builders navigate these tricky regulations.

The idea is simple: UpCodes keeps building regulations handy by having them in one place, making them searchable, and adding project collaboration tools to share and search project notes. The company was founded by brothers Scott and Garrett Reynolds—an architect and software engineer, respectively—who saw an opportunity to help builders better understand and access building codes.

Most architects and engineers currently reference building codes through printed books or articles, which can get out of date and make working in different jurisdictions a pain. UpCodes currently contains regulations for 40 states and New York City.

Currently a part of the Y Combinator startup incubator, the company says they already have 45,000 monthly active users and 11 percent growth week-over-week. The brothers claim their app has generated “the world’s largest trove of construction search data” through the more than 110,000 searches the app has already processed.
