Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel to open in November

Louvre Abu Dhabi, which made our list of most anticipated new architecture in 2016 and 2017, is finally opening, a full decade after the project was announced and five years after the original completion date. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel—who’s also behind the new Philharmonie de Paris and an upcoming New York City supertall—the new museum even has an opening date: November 11.

In these newly released photos, the structure seems to deliver what the renderings promised: an ethereal “Museum City” defined by low-slung volumes and dramatic shadows. Inspired by Emrati architecture, the complex will comprise 23 galleries across 55 buildings, capped by a massive dome spanning 590 feet in diameter.

According to Designboom, this dome is made up of 7,850 “stars” of varying sizes, assembled at different angles in eight different layers, creating an intricate perforated canopy offering a stunning “rain of light”—not to mention some much-needed shade for visitors traversing the galleries underneath.
