And it’s cheaper than the competition

On the heels of Amazon’s first foray into prefab construction, the e-commerce giant has announced that it will also start selling mattresses.

First spotted by TJI Research, the new AmazonBasics Memory Foam Mattress comes in twin, full, queen, king, and California king sizes, as well as 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch depths. Prices range from $129.99 for the 8-inch twin to $349.99 for the 12-inch king.

The mattress builds on the private-label Basics brand, which offers everyday items like batteries and home necessities like bed sheets and bakeware. And while you could order mattresses from other sellers on Amazon, this is the first mattress to be sold by the company directly.

The move puts Amazon in direct competition with the many “mattress in a box” concepts that have emerged since Casper launched in 2014. Competitors like Layla offer a two-sided mattress with a choice between firm or soft. The Avocado mattress is made of all organic, nontoxic materials. And Eight offers a mattress with smart home integration, collecting data on your rest as you sleep.

AmazonBasics mattresses, however, are much cheaper than the competition. As Business Insider notes, this is an example of Amazon creating its own version of a best seller from a third-party merchant on its website—something Senator Elizabeth Warren and others have criticized.

There’s no word yet—since the product is new—whether the mattresses are actually comfortable. We’ll have to wait for the Amazon reviews to decide that.
