Based on your zodiac sign, what should your Halloween costume be?

Architecture-inspired costumes for anyone who loves to blame the planets for their woes

This has been the year when astrology memes officially became both unavoidable and uncomfortably relatable. In years past, we’ve provided inspiration for architect costumes and celebrated the legendary costume parties of the Bauhaus. In 2018, we decided to turn to the cosmos.

After miles of scrolling down astrology meme pages on Instagram, we were inspired to put our own Curbed twist on Halloween costumes, based on your zodiac sign. While the architects and designers mentioned below may not have actual birthdays that correspond to your zodiac’s dates, their personalities and styles are spot-on matches to each sign’s tropes.

Aries

(March 21–April 19)

Bold, ambitious Aries has a kindred spirit in Frank Gehry, the architect known for frenetic, metallic, and expressive buildings that promise to turn neighborhoods—and sometimes entire cities—around.

The LA-based architect has worked on a number of projects large and small, from his own home in Santa Monica to the Bilbao museum in Spain and an epic redesign of the Los Angeles River. Aries, a fire sign, is also known for its explosive temper. And while Gehry is the consummate intellectual, who can forget that infamous photo of him flipping the bird at a reporter?

Taurus

(April 20 - May 2)

The formula for a house-flipping show is fairly predictable: A couple finds a fixer-upper, envisions sledgehammering walls and installing the most on-trend finishes and appliances, and thinks they can overhaul the abode inexpensively, only to find (plot twist!) hidden costs that make the budget balloon.

This cycle repeats project after project, episode after episode, and the big reveal is always a satisfying dreamy and luxurious home. This dependable, materialistic, stubborn, homebody is essentially a Taurus.

Gemini

(May 21 - June 21)

You’re never exactly sure what Bjarke Ingels will design next. Will it be a torqued pyramid in Manhattan? An ethereal orb at Burning Man? A football stadium? Prefabricated floating dorms? The Hyperloop? All of this is in the purview of contemporary architecture’s most fame-hungry celebrity practitioner.

Speaking in catchphrases like “hedonistic sustainability” to help make heady resiliency topics relatable, and offering ever-quotable quips (see Rolling Stone’s 2016 profile on him), Ingels is the ultimate Gemini: the playful, fast-moving social butterfly with broad interests.

Cancer

(June 21 - July 22)

The world would be much better with more work from the late Zaha Hadid. Her soul-stirring, imaginative buildings pushed the boundaries of architecture. While Cancer might not be the obvious association for an architect known as the “Queen of the Curve” and who designed blockbuster spaces like Olympic stadiums, airports, opera houses, and cultural buildings, we think the water sign is just right for her fluid silhouettes. Hadid’s structure’s retain softness despite their hard shells.

Leo

(July 23 -August 22)

Leos are a proud sort—they’re vain, theatrical, passionate, brave, and the center of attention. So, too, is #Architecture, the ultra Instagrammable spaces and places all around the world seen through your phone. You’ve definitely seen that white ball pit from the National Building Museum’s Fun House exhibition, designed by Snarkitecture, which instantly grabbed attention across the internet—and became, perhaps, a tad overexposed. Insta-Architecture roars into your timeline like the Leo it is.

Virgo

(August 23 - September 22)

The holy grail of prefab architecture is something that’s cost effective, efficient to build, and breathtakingly beautiful. For generations, architects like Michelle Kaufmann have embarked on quests to perfect these building systems. In Kaufmann’s work in particular, there’s a strong tendency toward sustainability and practicality: two traits that are high up any Virgo’s recipe for success.

Libra

(September 23 - October 22)

For many, a perennial goal is getting better organized. But when Marie Kondo came around, the decluttering guru had 4 million people around the world asking if their belongings “brought them joy,” and turned ascetic tidiness into a quasi religion. Fixated on balance and harmony, and the minimalist aesthetic this philosophy embodies, Kondo resolved countless household conflicts and existential crises like her kindred spirit of an astrological sign: Libra.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21)

Stepping inside a cathedral is always a spectacular experience. The dramatic architecture—its enormous scale, meticulous detailing, sober materials—is tailor-made to evoke transcendence and closeness to a higher power. With its highly sculpted form, abstract geometries, and biomorphic motifs, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is like that experience... but on some sort of psychedelic drug. Or if a mysterious, emotionally intense Scorpio designed it.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

Sagittariuses are known for their adventurous spirits and thrill-seeking personalities. So, too, are Denise Scott Brown and her husband, the late Robert Venturi. In the 1960s and 1970s, the architects traveled across the United States researching and photographing roadside buildings, streets, and people for a project on American urbanism that would eventually become their seminal book Learning from Las Vegas. In their built work, they remixed classical references and modern design elements to create a wholly unique postmodern style that continues to inspire a cult following today.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

It usually takes decades before architects hit their stride. At 83 years old, Norman Foster is peaking. He designed Apple’s Cupertino headquarters—a.k.a. the overhyped spaceship—and his firm recently completed numerous office towers, financial centers, and cultural projects, and has more in the pipeline. To achieve this type of output requires strong leadership, courage, unwavering focus, and a workaholic attitude, which Foster possess. He’s always sketching—even when he’s sitting in a unicorn floatie—a testament to Capricorn’s tendency to become more playful as they age.

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18)

We’re in a wellness-obsessed culture. Green juice, healing crystals, aromatherapy, and alternative medicine abounds. It makes sense in this context that James Turrell, a contemporary artist who works with color and light as a medium, is enjoying renewed interest. Stepping into one of his light sculptures is akin to chromotherapy and puts you in a meditative state. Eccentric and nonconformist in his work, Turrell is the textbook definition of an Aquarius.

Pisces

(February 19- March 20)

Pisces are known to be emotional, spiritual, compassionate, and empathetic; they are ancient souls. When the architects and designers of Sea Ranch set out to build an ecological community on the Northern California coast, they created buildings in dialogue with a landscape shaped by millions of years of geologic activity. While the wood-clad buildings are spectacular, some of the most enduring, and emotionally evocative, elements from the development are its supergraphics, by Barbara Stauffacher Solomon.
