Stunning architecture looks good in any medium, but when a photographer captures the essence of a building it can show the structure in its truest form. Each year we see a plethora of outstanding architecture photos, and some of the best of the year are highlighted in this year’s World Architecture Festival’s Architectural Photography Awards.

Held in Amsterdam from November 28-30, the World Architecture Festival will showcase 20 shortlisted photographs from four categories: exteriors, interiors, sense of place, and buildings in use. The finalists include entrants from India, China, Australia, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, exhibiting a range of different techniques and perspectives.

Unusually, two entries feature the same building—the Wolfgang Buttress-designed Hive in Richmond, England. But the photos are very different; Omer Kanipak’s image of children peering into the Hive was shortlisted in the buildings in use category, while Jeff Eden’s photo of the building in snow was shortlisted in the Sense of Place category.

Each of the main category winners in The Architectural Photography Awards will receive a cash prize of $3000 with the Portfolio winner receiving $1000 and the two Mobile winners $250 each.
