Ikea teases a new indoor farming collaboration with Tom Dixon

In 2016, Ikea launched a soilless hydroponic system that aimed to make it easier for city dwellers to grow herbs in their dark, cramped apartments. It apparently was the first step in a bigger plan to make indoor urban farming a veritable thing.

The Swedish furniture company just announced a partnership with British designer Tom Dixon to develop a series of indoor farming products that will encourage a sustainable lifestyle by making “homes the new farmland” (their words, not ours).

Details are scarce on what these products might actually look like—Ikea will formally announce the line in May 2019 at the Chelsea Flower Show in London and the products will be in stores by 2021—but it’s safe to assume that it will take its past urban farming efforts a step further.

Ikea has already experimented with indoor growing in the form of hydroponics and open-sourced plans for Growspace, the spherical plywood farm it designed with Space 10. If Ikea’s past Dixon collaborations are any indication, you can assume these gardening tools will be stylish, modular, and potentially “hackable.”
