Location: Northport, Michigan

Price: $1,195,000

A unique contemporary home has come on the market in Northport, a village on the northwest coast of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Designed by San Francisco-based Anderson Anderson Architecture in 2004, the Chameleon House, as it’s known, rises like a tower on a hill, overlooking cherry orchards and Lake Michigan.

The vertical 1,600-square-foot residence features a prefabricated steel construction sheathed in a skirting wall of recycled translucent polyethylene slats that protrude two feet from the galvanized sheet metal that clads the walls. The effect is a ghostly one, allowing the haloed home to simultaneously dissolve further into or reflect the color of the landscape. Its architecture also echoes few farm structures found nearby.

As for its interiors, though industrial like its facade, warmth is imbued by way of Douglas fir-clad walls and built-ins, with huge windows allowing natural sunlight to pour inside. There are four bedrooms and three baths, with the main entrance set on the third level (due to the sloping site), with the children’s room below that and the main living spaces on the top floor. Set on one acre at 7452 North Manitou Trail, it’s offered at $1,195,000.
