Location: La Jolla, California
Price: $6,200,000
This spectacular concrete beach house in La Jolla, California, is back on the market, and it’s looking as splendid as ever. Designed in 2013 by architect Jonathan Segal for himself and his wife, the 5,480-square-foot modern residence was inspired by the steep cliffs of San Diego’s coast and stretches out toward the ocean by way of its dramatic indoor-outdoor spaces.
Constructed from cast-in-place concrete, the home appears to be an open jewel box, with glass expanses essentially rendering the walls invisible, and a canopy-like roof that forms both exterior and interior volumes. Working on a small site of 0.12 acres, the architect decided to place many of the home’s function below-grade, including a family room, game room, and wine cellar. This allows the living area, kitchen, dining—all on the first floor—and the master suite, which is on the second, to take in sweeping ocean views without intruding on the landscape.
As such, the living area transitions seamlessly by way of sliding glass doors to an outdoor patio, where a wraparound lap pool and fountain create the appearance that the home is floating on water. Located at 6005 Avenida Cresta, the four-bedroom with four and a half baths is offered at $6.2 million, slightly higher than the offer price from a couple of years ago.
