Location: Holladay, Utah

Price: $949,999

This modern home in Holladay, Utah, was designed by Wilford Knights in the early 1980s. A graduate of the University of Southern California School of Architecture and the store architect of ZCMI for 25 years, Knights imagined a dwelling that was not only contemporary in its design but also in its energy consumption.

Measuring 3,928 square feet, the wood-framed residence harnesses the sun and the breeze coming off the creek to passively warm and cool the space by way of an “envelope design” that promotes circulation. Of course, a wood-burning fireplace and a central heating and air conditioning system are in place as well, should you need it.

As for what this program does for the look of the place—a wall of glass forms the entire back of the house, which not only frames forest views and the creek, but also creates a grand solarium. Sliding glass doors extend this space right into the living room, where a brick hearth stands opposite the intricately carved wood panelling establishing the formal dining area. Then an untouched kitchen follows. Above this stretch is a gallery mezzanine that opens onto the sunroom.

Three bedrooms and two and a half baths round out the split-level floorplan, which is characterized by wood paneling (echoing the cedar facade), thick beams, built-in shelving, storage, and closets, brick and cork flooring in parts, and carpeting. And while the home appears to be nearly original, the minimalist interiors still feel fresh. New flooring and a few touchups are all you need to make this gem truly shine. Located at 2536 E. Kentucky Avenue, it’s offered just shy of $950,000. Take a look.
