New art gallery looks like an otherworldly treehouse

What does an art museum look like in a beachy resort town like Tulum, Mexico? Like no other art museum we’ve seen.

IK LAB, a new contemporary art gallery located at the Azulik Resort in Tulum, looks like a fantastical treehouse with its slatted timber roof and windows that look out onto the palm trees. The gallery, which was opened by Santiago Rumney Guggenheim (yes, those Guggenheims), has an organic shape that might feel familiar to its New York City cousin.

Visitors are invited to remove their shoes as they walk through the twisting and curving space. Floors built from polished concrete and bejuco wood are meant to give a more sensorial feel to the space. The walls are built with reinforced fiberglass, which allows daylight to stream through the wooden slats and into the gallery space.

We love the imperfectly round windows that dot the gallery and give the building the feeling of entering a portal to a strange arborous universe.
