Here’s a closer look into the collection dropping in 2019

At Ikea’s annual Democratic Design Days event today, the company offered a closer look at its collaboration with fashion designer Virgil Abloh, which is expected to include over a dozen items and will drop in 2019. Highlights of the Markerad line include the life-size Ikea receipt rug, shown above, and a glass cabinet billed as a modern-day cabinet of curiosities.

This unveil follows a live broadcast preview last month, during which Ikea and Abloh teased other rugs emblazoned with bold text and a vaguely Scandinavian- or Windsor-style chair (that looks, ahem, exactly like a Paul McCobb Planner Group spindle-back design from the 1950s) with a fourth leg sporting a doorstop. The designer explained that he wanted to give humble objects—a chair, a rug, a Frakta bag—an elevated sense of artistry and “pride.”

With the collection, Ikea’s goal is to appeal to millennials and Abloh’s goal is to build products that buck the trend of consumerism by making sure they stand out and are worthy of your purchase. “I want each item to bring a sense of pride, and I want the great design to be the biggest reason why you get it,” he said.
