Midcentury aficionados may swoon over time capsule houses, but most homes from the era have received several updates when they hit the market in 2019. What these remodeled homes showcase is not so much whether the terrazzo floors should have been saved—although the answer is always yes—but rather just how livable midcentury modern architecture can be.

Take this three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath in the Hemstreet Heights neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. A glance at the photos will show plenty of post-1960s influences—think new flooring, a remodeled fireplace, and an updated kitchen. Listing agent Dane Kealoha notes that at one point the original skinny vertical windows around the front door were multi-colored, and there was dark wood paneling throughout the house.

And while many will bemoan the loss of these details, it’s just as important to see what an updated midcentury house still offers: An open floor plan, plenty of light, and sensible spaces spread through a reasonable 1,848 square feet. Both the kitchen and the living room look out onto a lovely backyard courtyard, and tall windows make the space feel airy. Original details like pocket doors and wood trim only add to the charm.

If move-in ready updates only add to your love of midcentury design, 5414 SW Dover Court is on the market now for $719,000.
