Classic decor ideas to steal from a couple’s English country house

Nine finds that mix old with new

This week’s edition of House Calls takes us to a rural village just outside of Bath, England, where homeowners Cathy and Alistair Coulston carefully renovated their 19th-century home.

The two-story structure, with an exterior that looks straight out of a Jane Austen novel, required several thoughtful renovations inside, including a kitchen expansion that created an open and versatile kitchen-living-dining area. The space is a blend of old and new, where a bold-hued palette and clean lines meet the home’s original stone walls and flooring.

Taking inspiration from the dreamy country home, we sourced key products—or some cases, similar finds—from a few standout rooms so you can bring the look to your own space.

Living room

In the living room, blues and yellows add touches of modern to a more traditional space with a fireplace and sunburst accent mirror at its center. Black decor accents, like candlesticks and various lamps provide a sleek, minimal contrast against assorted collections of books and wall art.

Bedroom

In the master bedroom, pale blue walls and a tea bed is warmly contrasted with modern pieces made of wood and brass. Spark and Bell sconces flanking the vintage dresser echo the Graham and Green Columbus Pendant hanging overhead.

Drawing room

The drawing room-slash-study is anchored by a pair of Gubi Beetle chairs and a Moooi Container Table, with dark blue built-in shelving providing a rich backdrop. A Hay Hexagon Slit Table catches the light beautifully by the window.
