An airy, eco-conscious cabin built for a sculptor

Designed by Dutch design studio Woonpioniers, this simple, sustainability-minded retreat in Giethmen, The Netherlands, is part of the firm’s Indigo customizable cabin series. The timber, metal, and glass home employs a modular building system, as well as bio-based materials and natural heating and cooling techniques.

This one, built for a sculptor looking for a quiet escape, rises into prototypical house with a gabled roof and stove pipe chimney. Inside though, Woonpioniers softened the edges with bent pinewood walls that curve into a pointed ceiling like a Hershey’s kiss.

Nearly the entire interior is clad in light timber, including a stairway that leads to a spacious lofted bedroom. Under the stairs there’s a concrete shower that gives off a sauna vibe. The home also has a compact kitchen that’s tucked into the corner of the open-plan living room, where a big wall of windows leads out onto a deck that overlooks a thick forest.
