If you’re looking for a bit of architecture with your vacation, forego the traditional cabin or seaside cottage and try staying in a geodesic dome. Part kit-house and all retro, domes flourished with the counterculture and “return to the land” movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Now, the interlocking triangles are making a comeback on vacation rental sites, where their off-the-grid amenities, secluded locations, and funky styling make them top picks for architecture nerds in need of some R&R.

We’ve found domes in deserts, forests, and everywhere in between. From a geodesic tent on a farm in upstate New York to a bohemian-chic retreat in Joshua Tree, here are the seven best vacation domes you can rent right now in the U.S.

Spaceship-inspired dome in Pittsburgh

Landscape designer Joseph Yacoboni built 26 white steel-frame domes, and his original home is this 1969 version in Pittsburgh. Designed to withstand earthquakes and hurricane-force winds, the futuristic three-bedroom structure can sleep six with plenty of round windows for Instagram. Rates start at $175 per night.

Geo Dome on a Farm in Upstate New York

Set on a farm in the southern Catskill Mountains, this is geodesic living at its barest. Guests must bring camping air pads, sleeping bags, pillows, and towels, but we don’t think you’ll mind once you arrive at the 12-acre compound that oozes hipster chic. Glamp it up with 12 of your best friends and use the outdoor kitchen, grill, fire pit, outdoor showers, and even a claw footed bathtub. The geodesic domes were built by Pacific Domes and rates start at $350 per night.

Dome in British Columbia

Set into the hills in British Columbia’s picturesque Maple Bay, two guests can stay in one of two charming geodesic domes on the property. Added bonus: the owners also teach Argentine tango. Rates start at $103 per night.

Dramatic Dome Near Idyllwild, California

With room for ten and four bedrooms, this dome on 1.5 acres of land can house a crowd. High ceilings, a hot tub, and top-notch views from the decks allow for plenty of relaxation, while the three interior fireplaces add to the coziness. The dome is also adjacent to 40-foot high rock formations that look down into the valley below. Rates start at $290 per night.

Set on 40 acres in the rolling hills of North Carolina, this quirky two-bedroom dome boasts over 300 square feet of windows. You also get solid cherry paneling, a large deck, hot tub, and views of the surrounding working Christmas tree farm and wildlife preserve. Rates start at $179 per night.

Mushroom Dome Cabin in California

Although small in stature, this tiny DIY geodesic dome is one of Airbnb’s most popular rentals. Located in Aptos, not far from Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Carmel, the cabin boasts an upstairs bedroom, a bathroom, and a kitchenette. Throw in the gorgeous redwood forest and you’ve got a vacation. Rates start at $130 per night.
